Eastern Pennsylvania Region: Teatime with Janine Barchas
"Mismarketing Jane Austen to Lure Teen Readers"
Since the 1880s, the cover art and marketing tactics chosen to package inexpensive reprints of Jane Austen’s novels for teen readers have committed all manner of fashion errors and misrepresentations—from tepid to tacky and from wrong to worse. Extending the argument made in The Lost Books of Jane Austen about the impact of cheap reprints on Austen’s global reputation, Professor Janine Barchas takes on more than a century of Austen editions aimed at teens. Her richly illustrated talk will reveal how mainstream publishers have shape-shifted Austen in accordance with changing views of what might appeal to a young-adult audience. Prepare to feel amused and irate in equal measure.
After the talk, we will have an interactive Q&A session with Janine, which will conclude with one lucky attendee winning a signed copy of her latest book, The Lost Books of Jane Austen.
This free virtual event starts at 3:00 PM Eastern Time and is open to anyone interested in Jane Austen!
