In high spirits, JASNA's Washington, D.C. and Maryland Regions are planning a joint party to celebrate Jane Austen's 232nd birthday on Saturday, December 8, at the InterContinental Harbor Court Hotel, 550 Light Street, Baltimore.
The event will begin at 12:00 p.m. with lunch in the Brightons Orangerie restaurant. Afterwards, guest speaker Margaret Sullivan will talk about "Five Things a Jane Austen Heroine (or Hero) Needs to Know." Have you ever wondered how Austen's heroines learned those intricate dances? How they put together their elaborate outfits? Or how they traveled from country house to London before planes, trains and automobiles? Because Jane Austen wrote for an audience of her contemporaries who knew all these things, she did not go into much detail, but 21st century readers need a little help. Margaret, author of The Jane Austen Handbook: A Sensible Yet Elegant Guide to Her World and the Editrix of AustenBlog.com, will explain some of the details of how the heroines (and heroes) of Jane Austen's novels functioned in their everyday lives and will enhance your understanding of their motivations and actions.
The cost of the event is $28 per person, and advance registration is required by December 1. At the party, you will be able to choose one of the following two entrées: Linguini Pomodoro (linguini tossed with fresh plum tomatoes and basil) or the InterContinental Club Sandwich (smoked turkey breast, pancetta, leaf lettuce and oven-dried tomatoes served on brioche bread). Both entrées include an appetizer (choice of soup du jour or a mixed greens salad) and crème brûlée for dessert.
