North Texas Region
Jane Austen's Works in Historical Context
December 1, 2007
On December 1, 2007, more than 60 Region members and guests enjoyed a festive afternoon celebrating Jane Austen's 232nd birthday. The smell of garlic, fresh bread, and pasta filled the air at the Restaurant Pomodoro in downtown Dallas and made it difficult for anyone to concentrate on the business meeting. Regional Coordinator Rosalie Sternberg gave the traditional birthday toast to Jane, and our luncheon speaker, Professor Susan Hanssen of the University of Dallas, discussed "Jane Austen's England: A Change in Identity." The informative presentation enlightened many of us on the historical context of Jane Austen's writing.
