Southern Arizona Region
Jane Austen Day
June 7, 2008
It is such a happiness when good people get together — and they always do.
Emma
On Saturday, June 7, JASNA’s Southern Arizona Region will sponsor its bi-annual Jane Austen Day gala in Tucson. The event, which includes lunch, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Marriott University Park Hotel, 880 East Second Street. Join us as we explore Emma, thought by many to be Austen’s most entertaining novel — and perhaps her masterpiece. Program highlights follow.
- Dr. Kay Young, a 2008 JASNA Traveling Lecturer and Associate Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will speak on “‘A Mind Lively and at Ease’: Imagination and Emma.” Dr. Young will examine Emma Woodhouse’s fantasy life and consider the nature of her imagination and its role in bringing her to self-consciousness.
- In her presentation “Mrs. Elton Was First Seen at Church,” Diana Birchall will share her unique insights on the novel Emma gained through long-time study of Mrs. Elton. Ms. Birchall is the author of Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma and the Mrs. Elton trilogy (In Defense of Mrs. Elton, The Courtship of Mrs. Elton, and Mrs. Elton in America). A book signing will follow, with a limited number of copies of Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma available for purchase.
- Dr. Janne Irvine, pianist and musicologist, received rave reviews at the 2006 JASNA AGM for her unique program featuring music from Austen’s era interwoven with conversation about the novels. She has since developed a new program, “Janne on Jane II: Music in Emma,” which she will perform for us. There are sure to be some Irish melodies in the mix!
- Other Jane Austen Day highlights include a Readers’ Theater presentation of a short play by Diana Birchall, as well as an open discussion session on a variety of topics — because what’s more enjoyable than sharing “one thing very clever...or two things moderately clever” with friends?
JASNA members, their guests, and others with an interest in Jane Austen are welcome. The cost of the event, which includes lunch, is $35 per person, and advance registration is required by June 1.
