Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm and Northanger Abbey
June 26, 2010

On June 26, 2010, JASNA Shasta-Cascade traveled north and JASNA Southern Oregon traveled south to meet at the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm.  Acres of lavender with snow-covered Mount Shasta as a back-drop greeted us.  We refreshed ourselves from a tray of lavender lemonade which was brought to our table under the arbor.  We set out into the fields and walked the lavender labyrinth, then walked in the direction of Mount Shasta to the edge of the lavender in the clear morning sun.  In the gift shop, we made various lavender purchases of candles, sachets, spritzers, and fresh lavender, and then sat down under the arbor to eat our lunches.

Nan Quick, of the Southern Oregon Region, led the discussion of Northanger Abbey with some remarks and questions, and read to us the “The Fable of the Hare” which Austen mentions in describing Catherine’s education and which suggests the action of the novel.  When fifteen JASNA members assemble to discuss an Austen novel there are many experiences of the reading to share and we were delighted to do so in such a setting.
