December 7, 2013
On snowy Saturday, December 7, JASNA-Idaho welcomed 120 members and guests to honor Jane Austen’s birth. This annual event included a tea and featured guest speaker Carrie Bebris.
The ballroom at the Grove Hotel in downtown Boise was decorated with lighted Christmas trees. Tables were decorated with poinsettias and framed quotes from Austen’s novels. Music by harpist Alexander Combs delighted listeners.
Katelyn Holland and Karin Holland, who coordinated registration, greeted guests. Inside the ballroom, guests browsed the book and gift sale managed by Cheryl Russell-Griebenow and Kristine Kendall. Guests purchased raffle tickets for gift baskets prepared by Nanci Fritschle.
Tea service included scones with cream and lemon curd, finger sandwiches, pastries and tea.
Our guest speaker, Carrie Bebris, traveled to Boise from Dayton, Ohio. Carrie is the author of the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery series. Her fascinating presentation was entitled “We Met By Appointment: Dueling and the Code of Honor in Jane Austen’s Time.” Carrie used examples from Austen’s novels and scenes from movies to explain the code that governed dueling. Carrie answered a number of questions from audience members. Following her presentation, Carrie signed books for guests.
Susana Ossandon coordinated publicity for the tea. Monica Van Bussum designed table decorations and served as treasurer. Cheryl Neruda photographed the event.
