Jane Austen and the Regency Period
November 10, 2012

Jane Austen

The JASNA Minnesota Region will hold its first Jane Austen Day on Saturday, November 10, 2012, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Edina Country Club, in Edina Minnesota.  Join us for discovery, delight, and diversions as we delve into Jane Austen and the Regency Period.  Attendees will benefit from the knowledge and expertises shared by our guest speakers and enjoy fine food, tea and Regency wares.

Speakers

Dr. Sheryl Craig will be speaking on Food in the Regency period.  Her talk will cover what people ate, how much was spent, where they got their food, and the proper social customs.  Sheryl is an English literature instructor at Central Missouri State University; a JASNA 2012 traveling scholar, editor of the JASNA News, and has spoken at various Jane Austen events throughout England, Scotland and the United States.

JASNA President, Iris Lutz, will speak about the estates and homes, both actual and fictional, during Jane Austen’s time.  Iris has presented this talk to numerous regions over the past couple years and has drawn accolades throughout the country.

Hannah Burkhardsmeier of Matti’s Millinery will give us a short talk about fashion in the Regency Era and we will have a brief fashion show.  We encourage everyone who has fashions of the “period” to wear them and participate in the fashion show.

Sandy Lerner, who generously renovated Chawton House, will talk about writing her new book Second Impressions, written as Ava Farmer (her nom de plume).  A book signing will follow Sandy’s talk.  Should you wish to purchase a copy of Sandy’s book, we ask that you do so at this event, where all the proceeds will go directly to Chawton House Library.

Candice Hern, Regency Romance author, and purveyor of all things Regency will bring a variety of objects from her impressive collection for a show and tell presentation.  The collection includes scent bottles, vinaigrettes, cosmetic cases, jewelry, fans, purses, quizzing glasses, shoe buckles, miniature almanacs and more.  Candice will explain the historical context and describe how the items were used.

Luncheon, Toasts, Emporium and more

Luncheon will be served about 11:30 AM, and we will celebrate Jane Austen’s birthday with a toast as we bring the day to a close with a light repast of Sandwiches, Tea and Cake.  Libations will be available at the bar, should you wish to partake.

Regency wares, such as stationery, cards, puzzles, journals and books as well as embellishments from Matti’s Millinery will be available.  We will also have a used book sale.  Please bring any items that you are willing to donate to help raise funds for our projects.
