An Afternoon with the Regency Doctor
October 1, 2011

Doctor
“Surgeon” Albert Roberts treating Maggie Waterman

JASNA Dayton’s first meeting of the 2011-2012 year was a conspicuous success, with over half our membership attending.  The event took place in Mariemont, a Cincinnati suburb laid out to resemble an English village, at The National Exemplar Restaurant.  The charming setting and excellent luncheon set the stage for speaker Albert Roberts of Nashville, in his persona as a Regency-era surgeon.  He has been portraying Federal and Regency period doctors for the past seven years (he says the only difference is his costume, medical knowledge having made no advances in that time span).  He explained in lively and lurid detail the function of the instruments in his well-stocked chest.  We now understand quite fully procedures that had mercifully been vague to us before.  With the help of his elegant assistant Maggie Waterman and several volunteers from the audience, he gave a most engaging performance.
