"How Captain Wentworth Made His Fortune:
Jane Austen and the Royal Navy"
December 15, 2007

On Saturday, December 15, JASNA members from the Syracuse Region and guests joined JASNA-Rochester for our annual Jane Austen Birthday Luncheon at the Chatterbox Club in Rochester, New York.

Captain Wentworth
"Captain Wentworth" and
speaker Lisa Brown

Before the delicious multi-course lunch (including the club's famous popovers), forty attendees listened to a wonderful keynote address on Jane Austen and the Royal Navy by JASNA-Syracuse member and historian, Ms. Lisa Brown. In her talk "How Captain Wentworth Made His Fortune," Lisa took her audience on a tour of the Navy in Austen's day, including details on recruitment, rank, ships, and supplies.

Lemony Cake

Following dessert—a beautiful lemony birthday cake—guests from the Rochester Country Dancers demonstrated the English country dancing Jane Austen and her friends would have enjoyed.

We look forward to the Rochester-Syracuse Super-Regional meeting, "iJane: Jane Austen in the Information Age," on Saturday, May 3, and the Rochester Country Dancers' Jane Austen Ball on the afternoon of Sunday, May 4, 2008.
