North Texas Region
Fall and Winter Meetings Focus on Emma and
Jane Austen's Works in Historical Context
December 1, 2007
The North Texas Region's 2007 fall meeting, held at the Hackberry Creek Country Club in Las Colinas, was filled with Emma, Emma, and more Emma in preparation for the Vancouver AGM. We were honored to have Professor Patricia Michealson from the University of Texas at Dallas as our speaker. Her presentation "Gender in Emma" was captivating, thought provoking, and generated a lively question and answer session. And, her dynamic delivery and comprehensive knowledge made it easy to understand why her peers hold her in such high esteem and why the classes she teaches are listed as students' favorites. The meeting concluded with delicious teas, tasty treats, and wonderful chitchat.

Members of the North Texas Region enjoyed a
festive afternoon celebrating Jane Austen's birthday.
Then, on December 1, 2007, more than 60 Region members and guests enjoyed a festive afternoon celebrating Jane Austen's 232nd birthday. The smell of garlic, fresh bread, and pasta filled the air at the Restaurant Pomodoro in downtown Dallas and made it difficult for anyone to concentrate on the business meeting. Regional Coordinator Rosalie Sternberg gave the traditional birthday toast to Jane, and our luncheon speaker, Professor Susan Hanssen of the University of Dallas, discussed "Jane Austen's England: A Change in Identity." The informative presentation enlightened many of us on the historical context of Jane Austen's writing.
