Sherlock Holmes

Nobel laureate and Mayo Clinic physician Dr. Philip S. Hench and his wife, Mary Kahler Hench, developed one of the most significant Sherlock Holmes collections in the world.  The Hench family donated the collection to the University of Minnesota, including the 1887 Beeton’s Christmas Annual in which the first Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published.  The collection includes letters from Doyle to correspondents, along with the original artwork and sketches by Frederic Dorr Steele, the illustrator of Holmes stories for Collier’s Weekly.  The University has added to the collection through various acquisitions and currently houses over 60,000 pieces.

While the collection is not generally available for viewing, University curator Timothy Johnson has arranged to have a 221B Baker Street room set up for viewing and will talk about the collection, Sherlock, Watson, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  Tim is extremely knowledgeable about the collection, the author and the character and is a regular contributor to the Sherlock Holmes Society.

The tour will begin in the Irvine Park and downtown areas.  One of the most beautiful parks in the city, Irvine Park is a small green area surrounded by old Victorian Houses and nestled quietly within walking distance of downtown Saint Paul and West Seventh Street.

In Downtown St. Paul, learn about Rice Park, Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, Landmark Center, Children’s Museum, Mickey’s Diner, Minnesota History Center, and the Minnesota State Capitol, considered the second most beautiful capitol building in the United States, after Utah.  Visit the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Paul, the fourth largest cathedral in the United States with seating for 3,000 people.  Built in the Classical Renaissance style of architecture, the Cathedral dome is modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.  Additionally, learn about The Fitzgerald Theater.  In 1981 author Garrison Keillor campaigned to have the World Theatre (formerly Shubert Theatre) in downtown Saint Paul renamed in honor of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Next, the tour travels along Summit Avenue, a monumental boulevard of houses, churches, synagogues and schools.  Streets like Summit Avenue were not uncommon in the 19th century, but Summit Avenue stands as the best-preserved example of the Victorian monumental residential boulevard in America.  On Summit Avenue the tour group will be met by David Page, an F. Scott Fitzgerald historian, professor, author and former writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press.  David will talk as we walk and ride by some of the homes, watering holes and the neighborhood sites of the famed author during his earlier time on Summit.
