Possible Futures for Austen's Heroines
Join the Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Region for a group discussion of "Possible Futures for Austen's Heroines.” We will explore the different models of marriage that exist for each heroine, considering marriages that serve as warnings and the few egalitarian/love marriages that appear in the novels, as well as how motherhood might be imagined as part of marriage. We will also discuss the possible future that would occur if the heroines remained single and the possibility of widowhood after marriage.
In several of the novels, the heroine also imagines what her life would be like if the man she loves marries another or chooses not to marry her. We will see how realistic the imagined scenario is, and each heroine’s emotional response to that possibility.
